| stopped being an anti-social hermit long enough to chillax with the homies last night like the suburban whitey I am. we watched mega shark vs giant octopus and departures, the former of which was redeemed solely by a scene where mega shark JUMPS THE FUCK OUT OF THE OCEAN AND EATS A PLANE HOLY SHIT REWIND THAT THAT WAS GREAT, and the latter of which was sabotaged by its love affair with treacly and super-heavy-handed symbolism. I got home and discovered that departures is crazy popular and an oscar winner, which confounds me -- it is so clumsily and transparently emotionally manipulative that I half-expected to be drowning in glue and wire work by the time the credits rolled. on the other hand, we all had a good time shouting out the plot twists before they happened, and the architecture was exquisite, so the visual part of my brain was satisfied.
leading from that, we may make terrible movies a staple of hanging out, so soliciting requests for the most lolariously terrible pieces of cinema you know. I'm thinking of taking my copy of black dynamite with me next week to have a truly good bad movie, but there is something cathartic in watching movies on the same level of terrible as mega shark. come on, cumaeansibyl, flex your bad-movie muscles. bonus points for things available on netflix's instant watch!
now (ie, when I rouse myself from bed) I am off to MOA to buy jeans that fit + bras that are not falling apart. for kicks, I may just go ahead and look for new bathing suits, just to ensure that my self-esteem is permanently crushed into dust. I am hoping I can come home in tears and/or suicidal despair. stoked 4fr, you have no idea. | comments: 3 comments or Leave a comment |

| One of my co-workers went to a shooting range this week. It's slightly terrifying that they have these in Manhattan. But they were super-strict; there's only one kind of gun you can use and it's chained to the floor or whatever so you can hardly move it, and there's someone standing near you at all times. It's virtually impossible to mess it up.
Out of curiosity, we did a search for shooting ranges in my area (ie, the country), and found a number of them, naturally. Of course, the ranges upstate are less picky about the kind of firearm used, and (I loved this) one has the option of using a black powder rifle. No, I don't live in the middle of nowhere, not at all.
My ZTA alum chapter has been looking for some sisterly bonding activities... oh man, could you imagine?
In all honesty, though, I have more interest in shooting a bow than a gun. But both are something I feel I should do at some point in my life. I could ask my uncle the cop for either of these experiences, but... that's frightening. He'd probably invite me on hunting excursions or something. | comments: 6 comments or Leave a comment |
| Mass Effect was a pretty fun game. I enjoyed shooting people in the head, saving the galaxy, and levelling up from conversations multiple times. I really recommend giving it a shot!
(I played on the PC if that makes a difference!) | comments: Leave a comment |
| | The AI in Mass Effect for my teammates just got broken. No matter what command I issue, they just stand there. >. | comments: Leave a comment |
| This cold won't go away.
On the plus side, Mass Effect is a lot of fun. | comments: Leave a comment |

| THINGS IT IS NOT OKAY TO EAT a primer for retarded cats
1. bubblegum from the trashcan 2. thumbtacks that you knocked out of their box when you fell out of the window 3. the television antenna
he just climbed in my hamper and knocked it over, trapping himself inside, so I left him in there and watched him waving a helpless foot for a little while. | comments: 6 comments or Leave a comment |
| | I'm getting close to the end of TNG. Which means it's either gonna be Voyager or Enterprise next to watch. I still can't believe that Star Fleet would put Mrs. Columbo in charge of a star ship (which is made of nothing but shuttles and photon torpedos), but the doctor makes up for a lot of it. | comments: Leave a comment |
| 1. go out for sushi with friends I haven't seen for two weeks
2. stay home and write fanfiction and engage in academic discussions of the concept of heroism as it relates to TTGL fandom
guess which one I chose. | comments: 4 comments or Leave a comment |

| Chocolate Guinness Cake
1/4 cup cocoa powder (to dust the baking pans) 2 sticks (1 cup) butter 1 cup Guinness 2/3 cup Dutch process dark cocoa powder 1 teaspoon salt 2 cups unbleached flour 2 cups sugar 1 1/4 teaspoon baking soda, sifted 2 large eggs 1/2 cup sour cream
Heat oven to 350° F.
Lightly dust two greased 8 inch springform pans with cocoa powder. * ** *** (* Baker's note the first: it will make the outside of your cake/cupcake look extra-dark or burnt, you could potentially get away with just flour if you wanted.) (** Baker's note the second: I made these as cupcakes - made about 18 quite full cupcakes, but you could probably get away with 22-24 if you fill them less. They do puff up a bit.) (*** Baker's note the third: if you do go the cupcake route, use paper liners. It'll just look nicer than the slightly crumby outside you'll get otherwise.)
In a heavy saucepan or microwave oven, heat butter, Guinness, and cocoa powder until butter melts. Let cool.
Sift dry ingredients together.
Add the Guinness-cocoa mixture, and beat thoroughly for 1 minute on medium speed.
Add the eggs and sour cream and beat 2 minutes on medium speed.
Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for 25 to 30 minutes* or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean. (* I made cupcakes, they were in the oven for about 20 minutes and the toothpick was clean. Start at 20 and play by ear, depending on your oven's temperature gremlins.)
Place pans on a wire rack, cool for 10 minutes, remove the sides, and cool completely. Use a long serrated knife to even the tops of the cakes. Using a flexible spatula, spread each layer with a thin coating of chocolate frosting, stack, and cover the sides with frosting.
Guinness, Chocolate & Cream Cheese Frosting
1/4 heaping C cocoa powder 1/4 C Guinness 1/2 C butter, softened 1/2 C (4 oz.) cream cheese, softened 2 1/2 C powdered sugar, sifted
Whisk the cocoa powder and Guinness together in a medium size bowl.
Add in the butter and cream cheese and blend completely.
Stir in the sugar one cup at a time. If you like your frosting sweeter, feel free to add more by the 1/4 C.
* * * * * Overall, the finished product is a fairly dense but soft-crumbed cupcake with just a hint of stout flavour. The chocolate is not obnoxiously sweet in the cake, so it makes a nice counter to the sweeter frosting. It's not a blast of OMGLOL GUINNESS, but much more subtle. I think I might just make this again as I still have two bottles of it in the fridge, but I might just try to make it as a cake next time.

| I set up a new fic community at unspiraling (members only, woo) 'cos I was sick of doing the logout thing every time I needed to use theyellowvespa to add people and whatnot. I guess I'm writing TTGL fic or something now...? the novel is on indefinite hiatus for a couple of reasons, so I might as well try to write something just to keep from creatively stagnating again. it's dangerous 'cos it's so easy to slide back into poor writing habits, but right now, my focus should probably just be on producing than dithering over whether I'm over-reliant on cheap narrative gimmicks. once writing isn't like pulling teeth anymore, then I can start on the stylistic hissy-fitting. | comments: Leave a comment |
